Department of Health Sciences

Welcome to the Department of Health Sciences!

The degree programmes and disciplines that have been brought together in the Department of Health Sciences deal with the conditions, requirements and challenges that people and the health system face in the face of dynamic social change. In the department, we promote interdisciplinary cooperation, which is made possible by the diverse professional and methodological perspectives of its members. Together, we create an environment that is characterised by practice-oriented training in a total of nine different degree programmes and innovative research in close cooperation with practitioners and society, for which social engagement is central.

The Department of Health Sciences focuses on the following areas:

The department has two main focuses: community health and the economics and sustainability of health care.

Focus on community health

Community health is concerned with health care, prevention and health promotion for all people, with a particular focus on different communities. These are defined on the basis of group characteristics, such as shared characteristics and diversity characteristics, with which they can either identify themselves or which are attributed to them from the outside. These can be characteristics such as age, physical and mental abilities, gender, gender identity and sexual orientation, religion and belief, nationality, ethnicity or social background, as well as a shared workplace or social spaces. In order to reduce social inequalities, discrimination and their impact on health, Community Health takes a multi-perspective view of existing services, needs and requirements. Community Health addresses the diverse issues and complex challenges that arise with interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and participatory approaches to enable equal, health-related and social participation for all.

Focus: Economics and sustainability in health care

The three pillars of health, sustainability and economics form the basis of the work in this focus area. Classic economic issues in health economics are linked with ecological and social issues with the aim of making health care sustainable and efficient and developing innovative solutions for environmentally friendly and socially just health care. A course of study in this field prepares students for making future-oriented decisions in health care and taking responsibility for sustainable development.
