Research and transfer
Strengthening the core area of research is of great importance for the successful implementation of the university's social mission.
With its range of courses and research, the location contributes to solving health, social, technical, ecological and economic challenges, as well as to ensuring and improving health care for the population.
The close links between research and teaching are an integral part of our degree programmes.
It is therefore one of the university's stated goals to expand, strengthen, further develop and promote research.
As part of research sponsorship at the Bochum University of Applied Sciences, the Health Campus site is strategically expanding its cooperation with other universities, partners in the field and non-university research institutes, both nationally and internationally. The topics are based on current and future healthcare needs, which require both disciplinary and interdisciplinary responses. In addition, the university addresses questions concerning the academisation and professionalisation process of the health professions Occupational Therapy, Midwifery, Speech and Language Therapy, Nursing and Physiotherapy.
Research areas
Healthcare research
In the context of demographic change, increasingly complex treatment and care situations and growing health inequality, the field of health services research is becoming increasingly important across the board. In addition to structural aspects of care, the development of health care professions and complex inter- and transdisciplinary care and intervention contexts play a particularly important role. The university's research contributes significantly to needs-based and evidence-based health care for all population groups and is always patient- and client-oriented.
The inclusion of scientific and non-scientific actors from business, politics, health care institutions and civil society is of central relevance here. The Bochum University of Applied Sciences has already successfully established itself in the field of health services research. Here, practical care and research needs are identified and corresponding (inter)disciplinary solution concepts are developed. Digitalisation in the health care sector offers great potential for development: digital health applications and technologies such as artificial intelligence, which are developed with the involvement of users and tailored to their individual needs, can make important contributions to more effective and efficient care.
Community Health & Urban Health Research
Not least in the context of the COVID 19 pandemic, it has been shown that urban health research and the targeted addressing of different communities are of central social relevance and fundamental importance. Health-promoting and preventive measures are aimed both at the behaviour of individuals and/or groups and, in particular, at the design of a health-promoting living environment.
Social spaces such as entire cities or neighbourhoods are increasingly coming into focus, as the immediate environmental conditions are central determinants that influence health and health equity. New professions and application contexts are emerging here that need to be developed. Therefore, in addition to the development of professions and disciplines, the opportunities offered by digitisation in urban and extra-urban areas are also in focus here.
The University of Applied Sciences Bochum also has proven research expertise in the field of community health and urban health research.
