The Bachelor's degree programme in Midwifery Sciences

Midwives are experts for the life phase from pregnancy, birth, puerperium, breastfeeding, family formation until the child's first birthday. They work in different settings and forms: clinically, non-clinically, employed, freelance, interprofessional, in smaller and larger teams and independently.

The midwifery degree programme is dual in nature and consists of a practical part and a university-based part, which is reflected in an alternation of practical and theoretical phases. The practical phases take place at cooperating clinical and non-clinical partners. The clinical cooperation partners are in North Rhine-Westphalia, the non-clinical assignments can also be completed outside of NRW or abroad.
The dual full-time degree programme comprises a total of 20 modules spread over seven semesters (210 ECTS). The mandatory modules include 15 theory modules, four longer practical modules and the bachelor's module. In the 7th semester, we offer an elective area to deepen subject-specific and/or cross-professional topics.

Study content

Over a total of seven semesters, students acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to work competently as a midwife. The degree programme takes into account the current requirements of the changing professional profile of midwives. To this end, both scientifically sound, evidence-based findings and traditional knowledge gained from experience are taught.

Guiding principles of the Midwifery Sciences degree programme

The skills acquired during the Midwifery Sciences degree programme are anchored in the degree programme's skills profile and stored in the module manual.

They are based on six guiding principles:

  • The midwife as an expert in physiology in the reproductive phase of life.
  • The midwife as a primary carer.
  • The midwife as an agent in the field of women's and family health.
  • The midwife as an agent in the field of (primary) prevention and health promotion.
  • The midwife in an international context.
  • Continuously developing and strengthening (midwifery) scientific expertise.

Why should I study Midwifery Sciences?

Evidence-based:

The course provides you with comprehensive and scientifically sound preparation for the complex demands of care during the reproductive phase of life, from physiology to abnormalities/pathology.

Innovative:

Practical skills are taught in small groups in the skills lab using deceptively realistic simulators before being used in practice.

Practical:

We cooperate with experienced and committed clinical partners in North Rhine-Westphalia and non-clinical partners in North Rhine-Westphalia and throughout Germany.
