The bachelor's degree programme in Speech and Language Therapy

The field of speech and language therapy includes prevention, diagnostics and therapy of disorders in the areas of language, speech, voice, swallowing and hearing, as well as counselling for patients and their relatives. Speech and language therapists work with people of all ages. The aim of speech and language therapy is to enable those affected to participate in social and societal life to the best of their abilities.

In the Speech and Language Therapy degree programme at Bochum University of Applied Sciences, you will acquire two degrees in one: the academic degree of Bachelor of Science and the professional qualification as a state-recognised speech and language therapist. This dual qualification is a unique feature of this kind at a state university in Germany.
The course focuses on the scientific examination of speech therapy topics and the transfer of theory into practice, as well as interprofessional skills. We offer our students innovative and technology-based teaching and learning methods, as well as intensive support throughout their studies.

Course content: Speech and Language Therapy

The Speech and Language Therapy degree programme is structured in modules and imparts theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills and abilities, enabling students to act in a particularly competent and evidence-based manner.

Theory

The subject-specific theory modules of the degree programme in Speech and Language Therapy include the following topics:

  • Fundamentals of linguistics, medicine, psychology and pedagogy
  • Speech and language therapy disorders in their development, examination and treatment
    • Respiratory, voice and hearing disorders
    • Childhood speech, language and writing disorders
    • Aphasia, dysarthria, speech apraxia, dysphagia
  • Revision courses for the state examinations
  • Colloquia as well as an elective and elective area

In addition, interprofessional topics are taught, such as:

  • Research methods and scientific work
  • Communication and conversation techniques
  • Public health

Practice

The 2100 hours of practical training required by law (LogAPrO, the training and examination regulations for speech therapists) are implemented in practice modules that are closely linked to theoretical content.

  • For example, practical seminars and tutorials are used to teach exercises in the area of professional communication or voice and speech training. The skills acquired here are first practised with fellow students and then implemented with patients later in the course.
  • The internal practical phases take place in the university's own Teaching and research outpatient clinic (LuFA). Here, students have the opportunity to independently plan and carry out speech therapy diagnostics and intervention with patients with the supportive supervision of staff from the degree programme.
  • The external practical study phases are completed in the form of a practical semester in selected cooperating facilities (clinics and practices) and are accompanied by close, professional guidance from the university. In addition to the Germany-wide network of over 180 cooperation partners, there is also the opportunity to complete a practical phase abroad.

Five advantages of studying Speech and Language Therapy at the University of Applied Sciences Bochum

  • The course of study offers a close integration of theory, practice and science. It includes the same practical component as a training programme with a school-based training component and combines the theoretical content with news from research.
  • The course of study imparts the skills for independent, evidence-based therapeutic action and thus meets the advanced requirements for the qualification of speech therapists in terms of scientifically sound care at a high level.
  • The academic degree significantly improves career opportunities, for example by enabling alumnuses to take on management roles or to take on teaching and research activities and other responsible tasks.
  • The course of study opens up the possibility for interested alumnuses to continue their academic studies in the form of a master's degree and beyond.
  • The bachelor's degree is internationally compatible and thus opens up new perspectives on the labour market in countries where an academic degree is the legal standard in the professional field of Speech and Language Therapy.
