Sustainable management in the healthcare industry

Corporate sustainability and responsibility are becoming more and more important in the healthcare industry due to the increasing ecological, economic and social challenges of our time.

The establishment of sustainable management is particularly essential in the healthcare sector, as it has a high energy demand and resource consumption, among other things. The aim must be to increase resource efficiency in health care without jeopardising the quality of health care and economic efficiency. In doing so, the social component of sustainability (e.g. equal opportunities, a good working atmosphere) must not be neglected, as this is particularly important in times of a shortage of skilled workers.

During your studies, you will learn to understand the healthcare industry, to critically question existing structures, and to identify and develop innovative solutions. In the spirit of an integrative approach, familiar systems are combined with new, forward-looking insights and methods. In this context, the use of digitalisation potential also plays an important role. This means that after completing your studies, you will be able to answer the question of how technological and economic progress can be combined with added social value.

With this interdisciplinary, application-oriented business degree programme, we aim to train the managers of tomorrow who are ready for the ecological, economic and social challenges in health care and want to shape the future. To this end, you will be taught essential skills in the areas of health care management and corporate sustainability (for more information, see ‘Course content’).

To ensure that you are optimally prepared for your professional life, practical relevance and practical experience are particularly important to us. For this reason, the course of study includes a practical semester or, alternatively, a semester abroad, as well as a project module in which you can work on interesting projects with health care facilities in the region. The entire course of study is characterised by practice-relevant content that relates to interdisciplinary issues.

At the end of your studies, you will be able to independently develop solutions that are economically efficient, environmentally conscious and resource-saving, as well as socially responsible.

Why study the degree programme in Sustainable Management in the Health Industry?

In the face of the growing ecological, economic and social challenges of our time, corporate sustainability and responsibility are playing an increasingly important role. Climate change, scarcity of resources and demographic change make corporate rethinking indispensable.

The establishment of sustainable economic management is particularly essential in the health care sector. The healthcare sector has a high energy demand – a hospital alone has the energy needs of a small town. In addition, there is a high consumption of resources, which accelerates climate change. Furthermore, climate change is associated with negative health effects (e.g. an increase in infectious diseases), which present the healthcare system with further challenges. It can be assumed that this will lead to increased resource consumption, which would exacerbate the problem.

After completing this degree programme, you will be able to develop economically efficient, environmentally conscious, resource-saving and socially responsible solutions to increase resource efficiency in health care, improve the quality of health care and ensure economic efficiency. In doing so, you will make a valuable contribution to the sustainable design of the health care system!
In addition, the Bochum University of Applied Sciences provides your location, the Bochum Health Campus, and the health care companies based there, with an attractive location for students of health care management. The direct network with partners within and outside the region, which already exists during your studies, helps you to establish contacts with potential employers.
